More Money More Makeup: Discount Beauty Stores

Whoever said it takes a lot of money to look good must have – well, they must not have been poor. We all have coveted beauty items that were financially out of reach (Speaking of “Coveted”, I finally got the Urban Decay 24/7 Covet eyeliner! But more on that later). Some of us  haunt the drugstores, carefully choosing Revlon lipstick, Wet n Wild eyeliner, and Maybelline foundation, knowing that there are no testers and we must make a very wise guess. Others move cautiously through Sephora, gaze longingly at the Dior mascara and Laura Mercier blush, while making their way to the cash register clutching a mini version of BeneFit Bad Gal mascara (which still manages to not be cheap, despite the smaller size).

I do neither. Well, okay, I do buy drugstore makeup, but I swear that I am reckless enough to buy foundation that does not match my skin tone. Talk about a rebel.

It is possible to  own expensive products and pay inexpensive prices for them. Crazy talk? Nope, I’m serious. Check out two of my favorite places in Manhattan:

Cosmetics Warehouse- 250 W. 39th Street b/n 7th and 8th Avenues. Primarily a Revlon and Almay outlet, they also sell hair accessories, hair appliances, cheap bath products, and drugstore perfumes. Every thing in the store is 20% off on Tuesdays from 11:00am-1:00pm and Fridays from 4:00pm-6:00pm.  (

Cosmetics Market- 9 E. 37th Street b/n 5th and Madison Avenues. Oooh, this is my new favorite place! High end brands like Bobbi Brown, Vincent Longo, Clinique, Stila, Elizabeth Arden, and more stock the shelves, but don’t stay there for long. It takes a bit of work to find small gems, as a lot of what’s available is old or just not what you want. $8 for a Bobbi Brown lipliner? $7 for the Stila Bronze Glow Trio? $11 for MAC Studio Stick Foundation? If you’re sobbing by now, I’ll stop.

All Cosmetics Wholesale- for all the non-New Yorkers, discounted makeup. There are some good finds, such as Urban Decay items and discontinued MAC items. If you’re a collector, the MAC LE  products may reel you in. (

See, I told you it was possible. *runs away to try on the Bronze Glow trio*

New York has put up with all of this thus far, so here is where I reside. I can be reached for comments, questions, complaints, and incoherent babbling at:
