Dupes for OPI Mad as a Hatter and Absolutely Alice?

I got swept up in the madness (forgive the pun) of OPI Mad as a Hatter along with all the other nail polish fanatics. I was not, however, willing to pay exorbitant prices for it on eBay. One day I was in Ricky’s Beauty Supply, just poking around among the nail shades, when a bottle of festive glitter fun caught my eye. Mesmerized by the dazzle of glitter, I picked it up and looked at the back. “Nutty Hat Guy” by Mattese. My heart started to race. Was this an attempt by Mattese to copy OPI’s insanely popular “Alice in Wonderland” nail polish? Right next to it was a bottle of “Legendary Alice”, which looked a lot like Absolutely Alice. Even though I was supposed to be a frugal nail polish enthusiast, I bought both for $5.99 each, because I had to see for myself if these were actual duplicates.

I apologize for the not-so-stellar quality of this photo. I had trouble capturing this shade. Every angle I tried didn’t help minimize the glaring sparkles.

From what I have seen in photo swatches of  OPI MAAH there are at least four different glitter colors in that bottle: silver, red, purple, and green. NHG only contains silver, red, and green glitter. There is also more silver glitter compared to the red and green, rendering a brighter silver effect on the nails. MAAH’s glitter pieces look a little bigger than NHG’s. The application of NHG was passable. I am wearing two coats in the photos, and I had some sheer spots.

Mattese Legendary Alice

Like Nutty Hat Guy, Legendary Alice’s glitter looks to be smaller than Absolutely Alice’s glitter. LA also lacks the gold glitter that makes AA’s pop.

My verdict: Both shades have their issues and are not dead-on dupes, but if you are willing to forgive them, they can serve as substitutes for Mad as a Hatter and Absolutely Alice.

Mattese nail polishes retail for $5.99 each and can be purchased at Ricky’s Beauty Supply and on the website www.rickys-nyc.com
